Ahh, Rory, welcome to the fold.
I'd forgotten about the ASBOs, I think a little public blaming is a good thing (when it's all fun and banter).

I tried the green balls plugin when we first started using Hudson and I couldn't get my head around blue meaning success. As I recall, there were a few quirks with it that meant things like the graphs still represented success with blue so I took it off again.
The strange thing is that I'm so used to it being blue now I'd forgotten about that and yet I still refer to it as a "green" build.

Two things that will help keep your builds clean:

http://wordaligned.org/articles/antisocial-build-orders and green balls (http://www.secretgeek.net/hudson_ci_green.asp).

Look here, a trip comes to the khasi always comes first - the broken build can rot for all I care.

What you need is a paradigm shift. You're so wrapped up in your love affair with colour semantics that you neglect the obvious - a loudspeaker dangling from the speaking which blares "Build broken! Build broken!" at 120dB every time, well, you know when it happens. This will rapidly drive everyone nuts and hence act as an extra incentive not to break the build.
